US Fines Google $22.5 Million For Privacy Violations

Google received a fine of $22.5 on Thursday Nov 7th 2013 for violations of privacy for using cookies to track the users of Apple’s Safari web browser, a well known rival of Google’s own Chrome browser.

Google had pledged in 2011, not to place tracking cookies on or deliver targeted ads or marketing to Safari users but then went ahead and did track them, so The US Federal Trade Commission fined the internet giant $22.5 million. Google had previously told these Safari users they would automatically be opted out of such tracking .

No matter how big or small, all companies must abide by FTC orders against them and keep their privacy promises to consumers, or they will end up paying many times what it would have cost to comply in the first place,” said Jon Leibowitz. ~ FTC chairman

Googles efforts on exercising privacy protection came under question by David Vladeck, the Federal Trade Commission’s Bureau of Consumer Protection. ” It is troubling to us that that Google says, we didnt know” he told reporters. “A company like Google that is storing personal information from hundreds of millions of people has to do better.”  he added

“As regulators it is hard to know which answer is worse, I didn’t know or I did it deliberately,”  ~ David Vladeck – FTC – Bureau of Consumer Protection

Although Google agreed to the $22.5 million fine, it did not admit it had violated the earlier agreement.

“We have now changed that page and taken steps to remove the ad cookies, which collected no personal information, from Apple’s browsers,” the Google spokesperson said.

“We set the highest standards of privacy and security for our users.”
